5 Minutes and Coffee

Find The Right Time

Share Your Thoughts.

We often say we don’t have time to study, pray, or grow spiritually—but the issue usually isn’t time. It’s how complicated we’ve made the process.

In this episode of Five Minutes & Coffee, let's talk about why spiritual growth doesn’t require perfect schedules, long study sessions, or ideal conditions. It starts with recognizing the time you already have and choosing to use it intentionally.

Faith isn’t built by waiting for more time—it’s built by being faithful with the time God has already given you.

SPEAKER_00:

Hello everybody, welcome to another episode of 5 Minutes in Coffee. My name is Jerry and I am glad to be back sharing God's word with you. I want to wish you a very happy new year. I wish you all of the success, all of the health, and every single good thing that can come from this year. Now, with it being 2026, is this going to be the same exact thing as your 2025? If you had an amazing 2025, then I'm sure you're hoping for that plus more. And if your 2025 wasn't so great, or perhaps you didn't reach the goals that you wanted to, then I hope you've taken some time to reflect to realize what changes can I make for this year to reach my goals. And I don't know what personal goals you have, but I would like to offer maybe some suggestions of how you can pursue some of your spiritual goals. This is the time of year where many people will restart their Read the Bible in a year plan where they will say, This is going to be the year I pray more, this is going to be the year I read my Bible more, this is going to be the year, this is going to be the year. I think sometimes when it comes to our Christian faith, we approach it in terms of studying the word like we do with grade school. We have to set aside some time and we need to turn off the TV and have a pencil and paper and all of these things. And I'm not suggesting that there is anything wrong with blocking out all the noise and setting yourself up to study. But I am suggesting that if that is the way you feel you need to study and setting up an environment of pure solitude is what keeps you from studying, then perhaps that's not your way to study. Let me say that again. If you dread studying in silence, then maybe you need a little bit of noise. Maybe you need to reevaluate your day in how you study. I just wonder what the conversation would be like before God when He asked us about our study habits. When it's I didn't study because I didn't ever want to study with distractions, God. I just wanted to give you my pure focus and concentration, but unfortunately, God, it never came, so I never studied. Versus, God, I studied whenever I could, however I could, despite what was going on in my life. So I am saying that to suggest don't make studying the Word of God a school task that you dread. And I'll share some example of how I go about my faith when it comes to praying and reading and just how I have it tied to specific habits. I have done the most praying in my car. When I get in my car, that is my reminder to pray. That is the habit that I've tied praying to. When I'm in the house, I can pray, but I can't pray like when I'm in the car. Because when I'm driving, the only thing that I can do is drive. So once I'm on my way to work and I'm alone, I can turn the radio off and that's my praying time. And I can pray for however long I need to about whatever it is I need to. And the joke that I always make is if you are driving behind me and I am not in a rush, I feel bad for you because I'm probably going slow, especially if I'm having a deep conversation with God. Now, I cannot pray when I am in the grocery store because, for whatever reason, shopping is a different level of concentration for me than driving. And I don't want to tell my wife, sorry, I forgot to get that one ingredient that you asked me to get because I was talking to God. So consider your day and when you have moments of peace and moments of time that would be a great time for you to reach out to God. I was talking to a buddy of mine, and he recently decided that he is going to start hunting, and he talked about how you have to sit in quiet and solitude in the wee hours of the morning. And he said, I couldn't help but pray to God. I had no excuse. For some of us, perhaps that time is gonna come when we're drinking our coffee, perhaps it's when we're going on our walk, perhaps it's when we are doing that thing that we always do, which is a great time for prayer. And maybe reading is not your thing, but in this day and age, are you able to listen to the Bible? Is there something that you do every day that would make the perfect time to just listen to the Bible in a year? Yes, reading has its ability to help you retain information, but you know what doesn't help you retain information? Not reading or not listening to the word of God. When it comes to reading the Bible, I find that the best time for me to read the Bible is before I go to bed. I've tried to read earlier in the day and I forget. I've tried to read during my lunch break and I forget, but for some reason I can remember to read the Bible at night and I only read one chapter every day. That's it. I don't do more and I don't do less. So if I can't get through the Bible in a year, if I do one chapter a day, then maybe I can get through the Bible in five years. Maybe I can figure out a way that works for me. The whole entire point is nothing gets you nowhere, something gets you somewhere. This entire episode for the first episode of 2026 is basically telling you and me to not make excuses when it comes to our spiritual growth in God. Find the pockets of time that we have, find the tasks that we actually do have time. If you go for a walk every morning, listen to the Bible. If you have newborns and you're sitting in the room quietly trying to put them to bed, use that as a time for prayer. If you're a retired person who's playing golf while you're driving to your next hole, offer God prayer. I don't know what it looks like for you, but the answer cannot be I have to find the perfect time to do the things for God. Otherwise, you're never going to do it. Some of us have too much going on in our lives, whether we have intentionally put those things in our lives or those things have jumped into our lives. So, my request for you this week is to think about your day and decide what habits and what small pockets of time do I have that I can begin to devote to God. If you found this episode helpful, I ask that you just share it with one person. And I just want to thank those of you who have been sharing my podcast. It's it's very encouraging.
